Destin is known as “The World’s Luckiest Fishing Village.” Due to Destin’s close proximity to the 100-fathom curve, which is a 200 foot drop off into deep waters off the Gulf of Mexico, anglers are able to pull up seasonal sport fish such as four different kinds of snapper and triggerfish. Plus, deeper waters mean bigger fish including tuna, billfish, and sharks. With the close proximity to this drop off, the Destin Harbor has become home to the largest fishing charter locations around!
In addition to the fantastic fishing, Destin is also known for its beautiful white sand beaches and emerald green waters which are a tourist attraction for over 4.5 million visitors each year. Along with the beaches, another popular destination is Crab Island which is a sandbar near the HarborWalk Village in West Destin that allows many boaters to cool off in the shallow waters while enjoying food, music, and water activities.
The city is 8.2 square miles, of which 7.5 square miles is land. Destin was originally an island, but due to hurricanes and sea level changes, it eventually became a peninsula that separates the Gulf of Mexico from the Choctawhatchee Bay. The population is estimated at about 14,000 permanent residents.
